Mets sign righty Pimentel to Minors deal
Pitcher expected to compete for bullpen job during Spring Training
NEW YORK -- The Mets have signed right-handed pitcher Stolmy Pimentel to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training, the club announced Tuesday.
Pimentel, 25, posted a 3.97 ERA in eight relief appearances for the Rangers last season, spending the bulk of the summer as a Minor League starting pitcher. He has had spells in the Majors during each of his last three seasons with the Pirates and Rangers, producing a 4.39 ERA over 33 combined appearances.
Originally signed by the Red Sox as a 16-year-old out of the Dominican Republic, Pimentel spent the first seven years of his career as a starter before converting to relief work in 2014. He owns a 4.21 ERA as a Minor League reliever, and Pimentel figures to compete for a job in the Mets' bullpen next spring.
