NEW YORK -- The Mets signed veteran outfielder Roger Bernadina to a Minor League contract with an invitation to big league Spring Training on Monday.
Bernadina, 31, spent all of last season in the Minors, batting .276 with 15 home runs and 20 stolen bases in 119 games for the Rockies' Triple-A Albuquerque affiliate.
The seven-year big league veteran has spent most of his career coming off the bench. A .236 career hitter with a .661 OPS, Bernadina is unlikely to see many opportunities with the Mets beyond Triple-A Las Vegas. The club is already set with its outfield configuration, so much so that it is considering shopping new free-agent acquisition Alejandro De Aza during Spring Training. The Mets recently lost some outfield depth, though, when a 40-man roster crunch forced them to trade Darrell Ceciliani to the Blue Jays.
Michael Conforto, Yoenis Cespedes and Curtis Granderson are the Mets' projected starting outfielders heading into Spring Training.
