Matz ready to rejoin rotation with Friday start

Mets lefty experiences no issues with sore elbow after successful 'pen session

NEW YORK -- The sore left elbow that forced Steven Matz from his scheduled start Saturday in Denver should not sideline him any longer than that. Matz threw a routine bullpen session Wednesday at Citi Field, saying afterward that he felt confident about making his next start Friday against the Brewers.
The bullpen session was Matz's first since revealing last week that he was experiencing some elbow discomfort. After checking out Matz's symptoms, the Mets scrapped his start against the Rockies, then scheduled him to see a doctor Monday in Manhattan. Tests there revealed no structural damage, freeing Matz to throw off a mound as tolerated.
Matz last pitched May 9 in Los Angeles, winning to improve to 9-1 for his career. Overall this season, the left-hander owns a 2.86 ERA with 35 strikeouts in 34 2/3 innings.
