Gordon goes 5-for-5 with three RBIs in loss

NEW YORK -- The Marlins have been on both sides of Dee Gordon's five-hit games. A year ago, while he was with the Dodgers, the speedy second baseman set his single-game hits high at Miami on May 3.

On Saturday night, Gordon went 5-for-5 in the Marlins' 5-4 loss to the Mets at Citi Field. The outcome wasn't what he wanted, but the production keeps coming for the 2014 All-Star.

"This is why we got this guy, to be the catalyst for our offense, and he's surely been that," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "Definitely a bright spot."

Gordon raised his season average to .400 (20-for-50) with a .415 on-base percentage, and he's scored seven runs.

"No doubt, this guy has been huge for us," Redmond said. "He's gotten on base and driven in runs. He's done really everything you can ask from him, and playing great defense, too."

In a tough loss, Gordon matched his high for hits and RBIs in a game. He collected three RBIs on Saturday, including a two-out, two-run single in the ninth inning. His other three-RBIs game came on June 6, 2014, at Colorado.

"It's about the outcome," Gordon said. "The good thing is we fought hard until the last out of the game. These guys never quit fighting."

It was certainly an eventful night for Gordon in a number of ways. His first two hits, actually, were both subjected to instant replay.

To lead off the game, Gordon dropped a bunt single. The ruling on the field was safe. The Mets challenged, and the determination was the call stands.

In the third inning, he legged out an infield single on a ground ball to short. Initially, Gordon was called out at first, but the play was overturned.

"Man, I'm just trying to get on," Gordon said. "I was able to get on. It worked in my favor, but we didn't get the outcome we wanted."

Gordon added an RBI double in the eighth inning.

After losing their third straight to the Mets, the speedster found the most encouragement in the ninth-inning rally, which came up just short.

"You've got to build on it," Gordon said. "The spirit was there. Just play hard, have great at-bats. We didn't get the results we wanted. We've got to build on this and go from there."
