Marlins expected to make callups Wednesday

Telis, Solano among those likely joining club this week

ATLANTA -- Reinforcements will be on the way for the Marlins, but none arrived on Tuesday, the first day rosters were eligible to expand. Manager Dan Jennings said extra players could be arriving as early as Wednesday, for the series finale against the Braves at Turner Field.

The Marlins are in an interesting spot because they aren't necessarily looking to give prospects a taste of the big leagues. Over the next few days, a majority of the additions will be players returning from the disabled list.

All-Star Giancarlo Stanton, for instance, played in a rehab assignment game with Class A Advanced Jupiter on Tuesday and went 0-for-2 with a walk. The right fielder, recovering from a broken left hamate bone, was expected to be reinstated on Friday when the Marlins face the Mets at Marlins Park, but that target is now in doubt. After Tuesday's rehab game, Stanton declared his hand and wrist to be "not 100 percent."

In the next day or two, a third catcher, Tomas Telis, is likely to be called up. Infielder Donovan Solano, on the 40-man roster, is another possibility. The club also has roster space to select a player, like infielder Reid Brignac, who is at Triple-A New Orleans.

"We'll have some guys coming in starting [Wednesday]," Jennings said. "Most of the guys who will be joining us are on rehab assignments now. Having those guys back will be a big boost for us. It will put us closer to full strength.

"That's what we're trying to do, is hope we have one month of being at full strength and let's see how it plays out. Where we are record-wise, there is still an audition process going on."

Currently on the disabled list are pitchers Jarred Cosart (vertigo), Jose Urena (left knee bruise), Carter Capps (right elbow strain) and Jose Fernandez (right biceps strain).

The Marlins are hopeful of having a majority of their core players together for most of September, which will give the organization the opportunity to see how they perform together.

"We'll continue to stay with the nucleus of who we signed to be the regulars, knowing we can now afford to give them a day off, here and there," Jennings said.

The team got a lift with the return of Christian Yelich, who has been playing through a bruised right knee. Yelich started on Tuesday for the first time since Aug. 26, and went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and two runs scored in the Marlins' 7-1 win over the Braves.

"To his credit, he's playing through at not 100 percent," Jennings said. "I think that speaks volumes about his makeup, and the fact that he wants to go out and help this team. He's able to swing the bat. He's able to run. He's playing through a little discomfort. That's the sign of a guy who puts team first."
