Miami not expecting to make any more trades

WASHINGTON -- A month ago, the Marlins were active before the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline, moving reliever Steve Cishek, right-handers Mat Latos and Dan Haren and first baseman Michael Morse in three separate deals.

Barring anything unforeseen, Miami is expected to stand pat before Monday's waiver Trade Deadline. In August, teams have called on third baseman Martin Prado, but Miami maintained he wasn't available.

Manager Dan Jennings repeated the club's commitment to retaining its core players. Prado and lefty reliever Mike Dunn, another potential trade target, are signed through 2016.

The Marlins have a young core of players, and Prado's experience is valued.

"There's an ongoing education, the longer players stay," Jennings said. "From where Martin's come from, coming through the Braves' system, and being around Chipper Jones and guys like that, he's able to impart his knowledge, his wisdom, things that were passed to him. He's able to pass [that] to our younger players.

"I think just having Martin there, watching him take over the clubhouse. Seeing the way he's produced on the field, it's just been really something to be a part of and watch it grow, and it's been great."

The Marlins also were considering adding a pitcher or two to help log innings in the final weeks. But if that occurs, it is not expected to come through a trade where a player first cleared revocable waivers.

As an organization, the Marlins feel they have a strong core to build around. In the offseason, the hope is to add to the roster, rather than seriously subtract. Pitching is the priority.
