Crew places Blazek on DL with sore elbow

Reliever Jacob Barnes recalled from Triple-A

MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers placed reliever Michael Blazek on the disabled list with a sore right elbow and recalled reliever Jacob Barnes from Triple-A Colorado Springs following Wednesday's 3-1 win over the Cardinals.
Blazek, who last pitched on Saturday and gave up five runs in 2/3 of an inning, said there was swelling and inflammation in his arm following that outing. Barnes, 26, had an impressive showing in hitter-friendly Colorado Springs during the first two months of the season, owning a 1.21 ERA in 22 1/3 innings.
"I saw my [velocity] was a little down [on Saturday], so I tried to amp up on a fastball, but it just felt like something kind of extends a little too hard," Blazek said. "They described it as a couple of bones just colliding. It's gone down the last couple of days, but the smartest thing to do is just kind of rest it a little bit more before I get back out there and do something worse to it."
The first time Barnes takes the mound, it will be his Major League debut. He struck out 23 batters and owned a 0.94 WHIP in the Minors.
"He's pitching very well," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "He's earned this opportunity, for sure."
Blazek will travel with the team to Philadelphia for its weekend series and still plans to throw in the meantime.
"I'm still throwing like I normally would," he said. "I threw a bullpen today, so that was a good step. I don't think we're going to change anything -- stay on the same throwing program and maybe monitor it a little more and maybe go from there."
