Conforto sits with sore right thumb

X-rays negative; Outfielder expects to return to lineup Wednesday

August 22nd, 2017

NEW YORK -- Mets outfielder was scratched from Tuesday's lineup against the D-backs with a sore right thumb, an issue that has slightly nagged him for several days.
"It's just a little sore on my thumb," Conforto said. "Last night, I told the staff it was a little sore, went to go get some ice. It's not that bad. I played last night with it, hit fine. We just got in at the doctor as soon as we could just to be safe. Doctor said everything's OK, it's just the overuse, inflammation-type thing. So I guess they scratched me from today's lineup, but I felt fine to play."
Conforto smacked his 27th homer of the season in the 10th inning of Monday's 3-2 loss to Arizona. The team isn't in a position where they need Conforto to play through the pain, so he was given a day off to avoid swinging the bat.
"There's just no sense of pushing it to where we can make it worse to where it leads to several days," manager Terry Collins said. "Hopefully he's ready tomorrow."

Conforto underwent X-rays on Tuesday, which came back negative, and said he doesn't expect further testing to take place.
"I thought I was going to play today," said Conforto, who expects to be in the lineup Wednesday. "I guess that tells you how I feel."
McGowan recalled from Triple-A
The Mets recalled right-hander on Tuesday after placing on the 10-day disabled list with irritation of the ulnar nerve in his left elbow.
McGowan was with the Mets for three days from Aug. 13-15, but did not appear in a game. He made his MLB debut in Tuesday's game, allowing one run in 1 1/3 innings.

McGowan was a 13th-round pick in the 2013 Draft. He is 5-4 with four saves and a 4.06 ERA in 44 games (one start) for Triple-A Las Vegas this year. He will likely be auditioning to see where he fits in the Mets' future plans, as the team uses the rest of the season for evaluation.
Worth noting
• Right-hander will throw live batting practice Wednesday, as he attempts to return to the rotation before the end of the year.
