Kelly, Lockett, Quantrill pace pitchers

Torres approaches .400 at El Paso

Right-handed pitchers Michael Kelly and Walker Lockett combined on a five-hitter Wednesday night as Double-A San Antonio defeated Arkansas, 2-1, and right-hander Cal Quantrill pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings in his longest professional outing in the Padres' system.
Kelly, 23, the 48th overall pick in the 2011 Draft, allowed one run on two hits with six strikeouts in five innings to lower his earned run average to 2.90 as the Missions improved to 24-22 in the second half of the Texas League (46-70 overall).
Lockett, 22, the Padres fourth-round pick in 2012, allowed three hits with four strikeouts over four scoreless innings to pick up the win (3-1) and lower his ERA to 2.20.
Left-fielder Gabriel Quintana (.250) was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Shortstop River Stevens (.256) was 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored.
Quantrill, 21, the Padres' top pick in the June Draft, allowed no runs on two hits with no walks and eight strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings with short-season Class A Tri-City on Wednesday night.
Elsewhere in the Padres' system, Triple-A El Paso right fielder Nick Torres was 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored to push his batting average to .393 since being promoted from San Antonio.
In one set of moves Wednesday, the Padres promoted shortstop from El Paso and optioned shortstop to the Chihuahuas.
AROUND THE FARM
TRIPLE-A EL PASO (65-54): Fresno 10, CHIHUAHUAS 8. C (.352) was 1-for-4 with his 13th homer and four RBIs. 2B (.322) was 3-for-5 with a triple and three runs scored. Starting RHP Carlos Pimental (.11-6, 4.89 ERA) allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits and three walks with six strikeouts in four innings. LHP (3.22) allowed a hit with two strikeouts in a scoreless inning. RHP (6.43) struck out one in a perfect inning.
CLASS A ADVANCED LAKE ELSINORE (27-19, 59-57): Center fielder Michael Gettys (.291) was 2-for-4 with his fifth homer and two runs scored. DH (.212) was 1-for-3 with his seventh homer, a walk and two runs scored. Starting RHP Chris Huffman (9-5, 3.86 ERA) allowed five runs on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. RHP Zech Lemond (6.50) struck out three in 1 2/3 perfect innings. RHP Martires Arias (5.56) allowed two hits with a strikeout in a scoreless inning.
CLASS A FORT WAYNE (18-27, 54-61): The TinCaps were off Wednesday. SHORT-SEASON TRI-CITY (5-8, 24-27): DUST DEVILS 2, Spokane 1. CF Buddy Reed (.220) and 3B Boomer White (.245) were each 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored. White doubled in the bottom of the ninth and scored the walk-off run on two throwing errors. RHP Chasen Ford (6.00 ERA) followed Quantrill and allowed two walks with two strikeouts in 1 1/3 hitless/scoreless innings. RHP (1-0, 0.00) struck out two in a perfect inning as Tri-City pitchers finished with 15 strikeouts.
ARIZONA ROOKIE PADRES (18-23): Padres 10, CUBS 8. (.272) was 3-for-5 with a double, his third homer, a steal, three RBIs and two runs scored. 1B Carlos Sosa (.344) was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. DH Hudson Potts (.308) and SS Reinaldo Ilarraza (.308) were each 2-for-5 with a run scored. RHP Walker Weickel (12.00) gave up three runs on three hits with two strikeouts in two innings. RHPs Seth Lucio (1-0, 9.00) and Andres Munoz (3.71) each struck out one in a perfect inning. RHP Wilmer Torres (2.60) allowed a run on a hit and a walk with a strikeout in an inning for his fifth save.
DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE PADRES (28-28): DIAMONDBACKS 11, Padres 4. 2B Eguy Rosario (.348) was 3-for-5 with a RBI and a run scored. SS Kelvin Melean (.266) was 2-for-5 with a run scored. RHP Dauris Valdez (3-3, 4.17 ERA) allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts in three innings.
