GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Reds right-hander Michael Lorenzen's elbow tenderness has not improved, and the rotation candidate is scheduled to undergo a MRI exam.
Lorenzen tried to play catch on Sunday.
"Not great. Still having a little bit of discomfort in his elbow," Reds manager Bryan Price said. We're going to do, I think, an MRI on it just to verify there's no structural damage. Then we'll reassess the rehab. He will not be pitching as scheduled. I'll probably be able to tell you more about what our findings are [Tuesday]."
Lorenzen was scratched from his scheduled start on Wednesday and underwent tests with team medical director Dr. Tim Kremchek. An ultrasound at the time revealed no structural damage. The MRI could provide a more detailed look.
The Reds have three open rotation spots this spring and several more in the bullpen. Lorenzen was considered to have a good chance at landing one of those spots.
In his lone spring start, on March 4 vs. the Giants, Lorenzen worked two perfect innings with two strikeouts.
