DETROIT -- Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera has a bruise on his left knee after getting hit by a pitch during the seventh inning of Detroit's 9-4 win over the Rays on Sunday. Cabrera is considered day to day, the club announced.
After the game, manager Brad Ausmus said he had not yet talked to Cabrera, but he does not expect it to be anything serious.
"He got hit right on a nerve, and it sent a little pain from his knee down his leg," Ausmus said.
Cabrera was hit on a slider from Dana Eveland on the first pitch of the seventh inning. Cabrera went to one knee for about a minute after being hit, while trainer Kevin Rand and Ausmus attended to him. He walked it off and went to first base, attempting to stay in the game.
After Victor Martinez faced two pitches in the next at-bat, Cabrera was taken out, and Jose Iglesias came on as a pinch-runner. Cabrera took his time walking from first base to the dugout, and appeared to be in pain as he slowly walked down the steps. Iglesias eventually came around to score that inning.
Cabrera was 3-for-3 on the day with a solo home run and an RBI single. His perfect day at the plate pushed his batting average to .315 and his home run total to nine.
