Pipeline Preview: Soroka making second Triple-A start

April 12th, 2018

Here's a look at top prospects to watch in today's Minor League action:
Hitter to watch: (No. 36 overall, Padres' No. 3), El Paso vs. Salt Lake (8:35 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Urias hit his first homer and put together his best offensive game of the season on Wednesday. The 20-year-old went 3-for-5 with a double and is slashing .381/.536/.571 through his first six games of the season.

Pitcher to watch: (No. 31 overall, Braves' No. 3), Gwinnett vs. Rochester (7:05 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Soroka's Triple-A debut went about as well as anyone could have hoped, and the 20-year-old will be seeking a repeat performance. Soroka, who posted a 2.75 ERA across 26 starts with Double-A Mississippi in 2017, struck out five and gave up three hits in five scoreless innings to start the season.

Duel of the Day: (No. 79 overall, Twins' No. 3) vs (Reds' No. 21), Chattanooga vs. Pensacola (7:35 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Gonsalves was unhittable in his 2018 debut. The lefty fired 43 of his 71 pitches for strikes and walked three, but he didn't give up a hit over 5 1/3 scoreless innings.

Mella did make his Major League debut in 2017, but he still has some work to be done before he's a full-time Major Leaguer. The 24-year-old has an impressive fastball-slider combination, but control has eluded him at times. In his first start of the season, Mella gave up one run on four hits in five innings.
