Trout among Angels nominated for GIBBYs
Annual awards handed out based in part on vote by fans, media
Mike Trout might want to invest in a bigger trophy case.
Having already cemented himself as one of the game's best all-around players, Trout could be taking home some more hardware this offseason.
The 22-year-old Angels outfielder has been nominated for three Greatness in Baseball Yearly Awards this season -- for MLB MVP, hitter of the year and best hitting performance (for his May 21 cycle against Seattle).
Major League Baseball's A-listers will take home 2013 GIBBY trophies -- the ultimate honors of the industry's awards season -- based on votes by media, front-office personnel, MLB alumni, fans at MLB.com and the Society for American Baseball Research.
Mark Trumbo, who went 5-for-5 with four extra-base hits Sept. 10 in Toronto, was also nominated for best hitting performance, and J.B. Shuck was nominated for the season's best play. Shuck robbed Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista of a home run with an unbelievable over-the-wall leaping catch Aug. 2.
"I don't know if you're going to see a better play than that," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said at the time.
The Angels and the Orioles were also nominated for the year's biggest oddity after the two clubs had their May 2 contest disrupted by a swarm of bees hovering near home plate.
This year's GIBBY Awards feature nominees in 22 categories. Individual honors will go to the MLB MVP, in addition to the year's best starting pitcher, hitter, closer, setup man, rookie, breakout hitter, breakout pitcher, comeback player, defensive player, manager, executive and postseason performer.
GIBBY trophies also will be awarded for the year's top play, storyline, hitting performance, pitching performance, oddity, walk-off, Cut4 topic, regular-season moment and postseason moment, from MLB.com's Must C highlight reels.
In the past five years, fans have cast more than 50 million votes across the various GIBBY categories, none of which was restricted to individual League affiliation. Fan voting runs through Dec. 1.
Winners will be presented their GIBBY trophies at the MLB.com Greatness in Baseball Yearly Awards extravaganza during the Winter Meetings in Orlando, Fla.
Trout was the only Angels player to win a GIBBY Award last season, as he took home hardware for Rookie of the Year and Play of the Year.
This season, Trout is one of seven candidates for MLB MVP and 13 candidates for Hitter of the Year. Both categories include Detroit's Miguel Cabrera, who took home the two GIBBY Awards last season.
The Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw, the D-backs' Paul Goldschmidt, the Pirates' Andrew McCutchen, the Cardinals' Matt Carpenter and the Orioles' Chris Davis are also in the running for MLB MVP.
