MINNEAPOLIS -- Prior to Monday's series opener against the Twins, the Angels announced that Michael Trout will not participate in the 2017 All-Star Game presented by Mastercard due to his ongoing rehab from a thumb injury.
"I couldn't be more honored to be voted to play in the All-Star Game this season," Trout said in a team release. "There are so many players in our game that deserve to be on the All-Star team, so to be elected again is truly humbling. We play this game day in and day out for the fans, so I am incredibly grateful that they see me as deserving of such honor."
Trout sustained a left thumb ligament injury in Miami on May 28, which has caused him to miss the previous 33 games after he underwent surgery. Prior to the injury, Trout was batting .337 with 16 home runs and 36 RBIs. It marked the sixth consecutive All-Star selection for Trout, and his fifth straight year as a starter.
Trout is expected to report to Class A Inland Empire for a workout on Tuesday. The club will then determine the next step in his rehab.

"Mike has made some remarkable strides in his rehab," manager Mike Scioscia said. "He should be ready to play in rehab games sometime later this week. Trying to cram and get ready for an All-Star Game, although it's a great honor and I know something he really enjoys, just not the way you go about the rehab scenario."
The Halos have stayed competitive in the American League West despite not having their best player. They went 14-14 in June and split the first two games of July, and have a positive run differential during that span.
The absence of Trout during the Midsummer Classic will be felt not only for the Angels' center fielder, but the rest of baseball. He notched consecutive All-Star Game MVP awards in 2014 and '15.
"I know it's disappointing for Mike, because he really enjoys it," Scioscia said. "We all have priorities, and his first priority is to get healthy and get ready to play. The timing of it just isn't going to work. "
Worth noting
• Right-hander Matthew Shoemaker (forearm strain) is slated to pitch for Inland Empire during a rehab outing on Tuesday. He is not expected to go longer than four innings. The team will wait to determine if Shoemaker needs another rehab outing before returning to the big league rotation.
