Gindl, Gomez, Weeks all tag Nicasio for doubles
Wang gives up three runs but still has not issued a walk this spring
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Brewers' Carlos Gomez drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning -- from lefty Boone Logan, who was making his spring debut after recovering from offseason elbow surgery -- to defeat the Rockies, 4-3, on Thursday at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick in front of a sellout crowd of 12,650.
The Rockies signed Logan, who played the last four years with the Yankees, for three years and $16.5 million to be a lefty setup man. The club knew he was coming off of an operation to shave down a bone spur and remove bone chips from the throwing elbow, and has been bringing him along slowly. Logan's plan was to make about five appearances before the March 31 regular-season opener at Miami.
Logan gave up three singles, to Caleb Gindl, Mitch Haniger and Irving Falu, the last a bloop to right field. Gomez took his four-pitch walk with one out. Logan fanned Rickie Weeks before leaving. Righty reliever Brooks Brown ended the inning by inducing Jonathan Lucroy into a fly ball to right.
The Rockies scored three early runs -- one on Brandon Barnes' first homer of the spring, to lead off the third inning -- in 2 2/3 innings against Wei-Chung Wang. A Rule 5 pick from the Pirates, Wang is going for a bullpen spot. From there, a parade of relievers kept the Rockies in check.
Rockies starter Juan Nicasio, going against a lineup whose top half was representative of a regular-season order, gave up three runs, three hits and three walks.
Gindl doubled in two fourth-inning runs. Gomez and Weeks each doubled to open the sixth, with the latter hit tying the score at 3. With two out and Weeks at third, the Rockies went to righty Tommy Kahnle, a Rule 5 pick from the Yankees, who froze Lyle Overbay for a called third strike to end the inning. Kahnle has a 1.35 ERA with six strikeouts against two walks in 6 1/3 spring innings.
