Minors coaches among Brewers' callups
Double-A righty Lopez may get taste of Majors this month
MILWAUKEE -- Some of the Brewers' Minor League managers and at least one instructor will be among the team's September callups as affiliates' seasons come to an end.
Roving Minor League infield coordinator Bob Miscik is expected to join manager Craig Counsell's coaching staff on a road trip that begins Friday in Cincinnati. He will be followed by Class A Wisconsin's Matt Erickson, a former infielder who played four games for the Brewers in 2004, who is expected for a six-game homestand from Sept. 15-20, as first reported by the Appleton Post-Crescent.
"I think it's a great experience for them," Counsell said. "Matt played in the big leagues, but when you're watching A-ball every day, I think it's good, up close, to get that view [of some Major League games]. I think it's a nice perspective that he can take back to Spring Training next year.
"And it's a reward for just doing a good job."
After his stint with the Brewers ends, Erickson will travel to Phoenix to work the Brewers' fall instructional league program.
"It's awesome, a great opportunity," Erickson told the newspaper. "I know Craig Counsell a little bit. I knew him as a player and now as a member of the Brewers' coaching staff. I'm excited to see how it all runs behind the scenes.
"It will be good to see the preparation and just the outline they have in Milwaukee and how Craig handles and delegates things. It will be a great experience."
In other Minor League matters:
• Double-A Biloxi's Carlos Subero was named manager of the year in the Southern League and right-hander Jorge Lopez was named the league's pitcher of the year. That team was forced to play its first 54 games on the road due to delayed construction of its new stadium, but clinched a playoff spot by going 43-25 in the first half.
• Lopez won the honor by going 12-5 with a 2.29 ERA and 134 strikeouts in his first 137 2/3 innings. His 1.10 WHIP and .205 batting average against leads the league, and he was the Brewers' Minor League pitcher of the month for both June and July.
He's a candidate for a September callup after Biloxi's playoff run because the Brewers will have to add Lopez to the 40-man roster later this year to protect him from December's Rule 5 Draft.
