Minor Matters: Flaherty evaluated after short debut

ST. LOUIS -- Some news and notes from down on the Cardinals' farm:

• Right-hander Jack Flaherty, the No. 34 overall pick in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft and ranked No. 5 among the club's Top 30 Prospects by MLB.com, was scheduled to be evaluated by the club's medical staff on Monday after exiting his season debut after throwing only 49 pitches. General manager John Mozeliak said the organization anticipates Flaherty is dealing with dead arm/fatigue and nothing more serious. Flaherty opened the season with the Cardinals' Class A Peoria (Ill.) affiliate.

• Luke Weaver, the 27th pick in last summer's First-Year Player Draft and ranked No. 13 in the organization, according to MLB.com, remained in extended camp to start the season. Weaver dealt with right-arm tightness early in Minor League camp, and that led the Cardinals to place Weaver on a more conservative program.

• Catcher Michael Ohlman, who joined the organization as a waiver claim earlier this year, delivered a grand slam in Double-A Springfield's 4-2 victory on Sunday. Ohlman, who hit just two homers in 113 Minor League games in 2014, has opened the season 2-for-10.

• Lefty Tyler Lyons was roughed up in his season debut on Sunday as Iowa knocked him around for four runs on seven hits (two homers) in four innings. Catcher Cody Stanley contributed an RBI hit in the 7-2 loss to extend his season-opening hitting streak to four games.
