Employees from MLB Advanced Media, MLB Network and the Office of the Commissioner spent Saturday afternoon participating in MLB's "New York Cares Day" employee volunteer event.
The event, at 161st Street and Grand Concourse in the Bronx, included two projects: finishing a jersey mural and cleaning the Roberto Clemente Community Garden.
"Major League Baseball, our clubs and players have long demonstrated a commitment to giving back to communities where our fans live, work and play," MLB vice president of community affairs Tom Brasuell said. "This philanthropic spirit extends to employees at the Commissioner's Office, MLB Network and MLB Advanced Media. We were all proud to support New York Cares in the Bronx, and we look forward to future opportunities to make a difference here in the tri-state area."
The mural, located along the pedestrian path at 161st Street and Grand Concourse in the Bronx, is situated between the entrance to Joyce Kilmer Park and Lou Gehrig Plaza. The design, by Nicole Phillips, was selected by the Department of Transportation.
The Roberto Clemente Community Garden, managed by the Bronx Land Trust, is known for its vegetables grown by community members. MLB volunteers assisted in removing debris, laying mulch and raking various areas of the garden.
