MLB to honor historic March on Washington

To honor that landmark, MLB will show a video tribute at the Beacon Awards Luncheon on Saturday in Chicago, ahead of that night's Civil Rights Game between the White Sox and Rangers at U.S. Cellular Field. Sharon Robinson, MLB educational programming consultant and the daughter of Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson, will introduce the video. She attended the March on Washington in 1963 with her father and her mother Rachel.

After the video, the U.S. Postal Service will present a new March on Washington commemorative stamp. This Forever Stamp is the third in the Postal Service's Civil Rights Series, following stamps issued earlier this year in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and the contributions of Rosa Parks.

The stamp will be on display at the Beacon Awards Luncheon and during the game at U.S. Cellular Field. It shows marchers against the background of the Washington Monument, with placards calling for equal rights and jobs for all.

Civil Rights Game weekend will begin with the "Baseball & The Civil Rights Movement" roundtable discussion at the Chicago Cultural Center on Friday afternoon. That discussion, from 12:30-2 p.m. CT is free to attend.

Saturday's Beacon Awards will be held at the Downtown Chicago Marriott Magnificent Mile on Michigan Avenue, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Former White Sox star Bo Jackson will be honored, and Hall of Famer Hank Aaron will be among the other guests.

The Civil Rights Game, set for a 6:10 p.m. first pitch, will feature the Rangers' Yu Darvish taking on the White Sox Hector Santiago. It will air nationally on MLB Network as well as locally on Comcast Sportsnet in Chicago and on FOX Sports Southwest in Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas.
