Noah Syndergaard notched 11 strikeouts in the Mets' win over the Brewers on Sunday, but while all-business on the mound, the 6-foot-6 right-hander is quite the character off the field.
Affectionately called "Thor" by fans, Syndergaard's nickname wasn't a result of his long blonde locks and tall build. It all began when he tweeted a photo of himself dressed as the superhero doing squats in the weight room on Halloween.
"The home planet of Thor is called Asgard, which is like my last name," Syndergaard told SNY's Mets Hot Stove. "It just kind of stuck with me."
His family even has an Australian spaniel named Thor. In fact, the dog had the name before Syndergaard.
Syndergaard has an arsenal of sidekicks to accompany him to the mound. He names his gloves based on popular characters of TV shows and movies. The gloves names include Tyrion Lannister and Jon Snow from "Game of Thrones," Heisenberg from "Breaking Bad," Ivan Drago from "Rocky IV," Rick Grimes from "The Walking Dead," Thor and Loki from "The Mighty Thor" comics.
While he's already building a superhero career, Syndergaard's humorous Twitter banter and love of country music demonstrate his human side.
You'd never guess the kid from Mansfield, Texas, who ate two peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches with a glass of milk every night before bed to gain weight, would be on the mound recording double-digit strikeout games for the Mets.
