Stats of the Day: Betts in great company
Here are five interesting items from around the big leagues this weekend …
• In Boston's 5-1 win over the Yankees, Mookie Betts doubled twice, while Xander Bogaerts doubled and singled. Betts has 41 doubles on the season, the fourth most for any Red Sox player in an age-22 or younger season. In his age-20 season, Ted Williams had 44 doubles in 1939 and 43 in '40. In his age-22 season in 1962, Carl Yastrzemski hit 43 doubles.

Among Red Sox in age-22 or younger seasons, Betts' 64 extra-base hits register as the sixth most. Williams -- from his age-20 through age-22 seasons -- owns the three highest tallies (86 in 1939, 80 in '40, 73 in '41). Bobby Doerr had 69 extra-base hits in his age-22 season in '40, while Yastrzemski had 68 in his age-22 season in '62.
• Nationals righty Max Scherzer took a no-hitter into the eighth inning while fanning 10 batters in a 5-1 win over the Reds. With the 10 punchouts, Scherzer moved past Bill Stoneman (251 K's in 1971) into second place on the single-season strikeouts list for the Expos/Nationals. With 259, Scherzer trails Pedro Martinez and his 305 in 1997. Scherzer's WHIP now stands at 0.956.
With a league-leading 0.970 in 2013 on his resume, Scherzer is in line to become the 24th right-hander since 1893 to have multiple sub-1.00 seasons. He would be one of 11 to have at least two since 1920.

• The Reds' Joey Votto singled and walked to extend his on-base streak to 45 games. Votto's on-base streak is three games shy of matching Pete Rose's modern-era franchise record of 48 in 1978. Votto has reached base safely 312 times, the second-highest total in Reds history. Votto already holds the mark with 316 in 2013.
• In the bottom of the 11th in Chicago, Chris Denorfia slammed a pinch-hit home run to give the home team a 1-0 victory over the Royals. Denorfia is the first Cubs pinch-hitter to produce a walk-off homer to break a 0-0 tie in extra innings since Frank Secory hit a two-run home run in the 12th on July 6, 1946, against the Reds.

• In the Giants' 3-2 win over the Dodgers on Monday, Jake Peavy allowed one run in seven innings. In the past two years combined, Peavy has made 10 starts in September, posting a 1.71 ERA in those appearances. Among all pitchers with at least nine September starts combined in 2014-15, Peavy's 1.71 ERA ranks as the third lowest. The Cubs' Jake Arrieta owns a 0.66 mark, and the Nationals' Stephen Strasburg is at 1.30.

Milestone watch for Tuesday
• Madison Bumgarner has 228 strikeouts this season. Nine more against the Dodgers tonight would tie him with Rube Marquard (237 in 1911) for second most by a Giants left-hander. Eleven would tie Bumgarner with Cy Seymour (239 in 1898), who holds the team southpaw record.
• David Ortiz needs one double to tie Dwight Evans (474) for third most in Red Sox history.
