Betts in need of final push to ensure ASG start

June 29th, 2016

ST. PETERSBURG -- If Mookie Betts is going to start for the American League in the All-Star Game presented by MasterCard, he might need one more push from his fans.
From results that were released with less than 30 hours to go in the voting, Betts remained third among AL outfielders on the Esurance All-Star ballot, but by fewer than 50,000 votes, as he continued to be challenged by Lorenzo Cain (Royals), Mark Trumbo (Orioles) and Jose Bautista (Blue Jays).
Betts is also gaining on his teammate and friend Jackie Bradley Jr., closing within 225,000 votes of the center fielder for second on the ballot.
Of course, Betts and Bradley would love to be teammates in the starting lineup in San Diego on July 12.
"That would be pretty special," said Bradley earlier this week. "We've both worked really hard in order to help the team any way we can, and what better guy to deserve it than Markus? My very first roommate. You couldn't even script something like that. It would be pretty special if we do happen to make it. It would definitely be a unique situation."
Betts is hitting .287 with 99 hits, 18 doubles, four triples, 16 homers and 54 RBIs. Bradley, who had a 29-game hitting streak earlier this season, has a .294 average with 13 homers, 50 RBIs and a .950 OPS.
There is a strong chance that two other Red Sox players -- shortstop Xander Bogaerts and designated hitter David Ortiz -- will earn starting spots. Bogaerts and Ortiz have held wide margins at their respective positions throughout the voting.
