Givens proves his mettle in Orioles' loss

August 7th, 2016

CHICAGO -- Outings like Saturday's show you exactly what is made of.
Givens, called upon with two men on in relief of starter , allowed the White Sox to take the lead on a bloop single, but he never let things get out of hand, striking out the next three batters to keep it close in Baltimore's 4-2 series-evening loss.
"That was impressive," Tillman said. "That was a big inning, to keep it to a one-run ballgame. These guys [in the bullpen] have been good all year. Tip your hat to them."
Givens, who has struck out seven over his last two outings, said he's not doing anything different.
"Just attacking hitters to make them uncomfortable," Givens said. "I was a hitter once, so I know, if you get two strikes and get ahead of them, they're on the defensive mode. So you always want to put pressure on them."
Givens struck out , and -- all swinging -- to end the impressive 28-pitch outing, in which he threw 20 strikes.
"Really pleased with that situation," Givens said of rebounding after 's hit, originally ruled foul, was overturned for the go-ahead RBI single. "Just take a step back and just get on the mound and attack the hitters like I did. Just try to get us back in the dugout and let our lineup do what they do all year."

"He came in, it was a tough situation," Orioles shortstop said. "Just giving up the one run there was a good outing."
