Nationals acquire OF Scott Hairston & PTBNL from Cubs in exchange for RHP Ivan Pineyro & PTBNL

The Washington Nationals today acquired outfielder Scott Hairston and a player to be named later from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for minor-league right-handed pitcher Ivan Pineyro and a player to be named later. Nationals Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

The acquisition of Hairston adds a veteran right-handed power threat to Washington's roster. Hairston has posted a double-digit home run total five times in the last six seasons ('07-12), including a career-best 20-homer effort in '12 with the Mets. Hairston, who homered on Sunday in his final game with the Cubs, has eight home runs and 19 RBI in 52 games this season.

The 33-year-old Hairston is a career .244 hitter with 126 doubles, 17 triples, 103 home runs, 298 RBI, 169 walks and 289 runs scored in 829 games spanning 10 MLB seasons with the Cubs ('13), Mets ('11-12), Padres ('07-09, 10), Athletics ('09) and Diamondbacks ('04-07).

Hairston, who tied for second in MLB with three pinch-hit homers last season, has pocketed 37 hits, six doubles, 10 homers, 23 RBI and 25 walks as a pinch hitter during his career.

Pineyro, 21, is 6-3 with a 3.24 ERA in 15 starts this season with Washington's Single-A affiliates in Potomac and Hagerstown. Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent in July 2010, he is 13-11 with a 3.17 ERA in 42 starts during his three seasons of professional ball.
