Rendon begins rehab assignment

Infielder to play third base initially to limit movement

WASHINGTON -- Nationals infielder Anthony Rendon started a rehab assignment on Saturday with Class A Advanced Potomac. He went 2-for-2 with a double in Potomac's 7-4 loss to Myrtle Beach.

Rendon will begin the assignment at third base, because it's the easiest for him to play, according to Nats manager Matt Williams. Rendon, who has played the majority of his career games at third, has been at second for 12 of his 18 games in 2015.

"He doesn't have to go far. He is a step and a dive either way," Williams said. "The movement is more limited at third base. The initial thought is to get him some reps at third and then act accordingly after that."

Rendon has been hampered by injuries all season. He started the year on the disabled list because of a medial collateral ligament sprain in his left knee, and then he sustained a left quad strain in late June. Rendon managed to play 18 games in between, and he hit .290 with five RBIs.
