NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. -- The Nationals have been connected to many of the biggest names on the market this offseason, which has kept them among the most prevalent teams in the headlines even though they have yet to pull off a major acquisition.
They did address one need at catcher on Friday when they acquired Derek Norris from the Padres, but Washington still has several other options in play. So the Nats will enter the Winter Meetings aiming to complete one of those blockbuster deals that they hope will improve them from a postseason team to a World Series contender.

The Winter Meetings are always unpredictable. Plenty of action can be expected when all 30 general managers and plenty of agents come together, and this year, Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo could be among the most active.

Washington's pursuit of Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen intensified ahead of the non-tender deadline on Friday. Even though no deal was made, the Nats are expected to remain a contender for him or another outfielder, especially considering they did not tender a contract to Ben Revere. Washington has also been involved in talks with Chicago for a potential trade for left-hander Chris Sale, and the Nationals still desire bullpen help and have interest in adding one of the elite closers on the free-agent market.
