WASHINGTON --Two Nationals players were recognized by their peers for their achievements during the 2017 season. Max Scherzer was the Players Choice for National League Outstanding Pitcher, while Ryan Zimmerman won the Players Choice Award for the NL's Comeback Player of the Year.
The honors were revealed Wednesday night as awards season across Major League Baseball continued for two players who could be honored several times in the coming days.
Scherzer, the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner, is also a finalist for the 2017 NL Cy Young Award, the winner of which will be announced next Wednesday. As he continues to assert himself as one of the best pitchers in baseball, Scherzer has garnered more accolades. This is the second time in Scherzer's career he has earned the Outstanding Pitcher of the Year Award from his fellow players: He also took home the award for the American League in 2013 when he was with the Tigers.

Zimmerman turned in perhaps his best season with the Nationals in 2017, a year in which he turned 33 and was considered by some to be past his prime. He was the starting first baseman for the NL All-Star team and finished with a career-high 36 home runs.

The balloting for the Players Choice Awards was conducted in mid-September by the Major League Baseball Players Association. Scherzer and Zimmerman became the fourth and fifth Nationals to win awards, joining Daniel Murphy (2016 NL Most Outstanding Player), Bryce Harper (2015 NL Most Outstanding Player) and Dmitri Young (2007 Comeback Player of the Year).
For winning the award, the Players Trust makes a donation to a charity of the player's choice.
