PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Ryan Zimmerman and Jayson Werth homered off ace pitchers Matt Harvey and Noah Syndergaard on Wednesday, driving home five runs to lead the Nationals to a 12-1 thumping of the Mets at Tradition Field.
The loss ended the Mets' Grapefruit League schedule with 13 consecutive winless games, their last victory coming on St. Patrick's Day, though they posted three ties over that stretch. The team is off to play two additional exhibition games in Las Vegas against the Cubs, before opening its season Sunday in Kansas City.
"As you prepare for the season, you don't really worry about what you're seeing down here," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "There are guys that have great springs and guys that have bad springs, and you can't get caught up in either one."
Making his first start since the Mets scratched him earlier this week due to a blood clot in his bladder, Harvey allowed three of the first four Nationals he faced to reach base. The third of those was Zimmerman, who launched a three-run homer to plate Anthony Rendon and Bryce Harper.

Syndergaard relieved Harvey to start the third and gave up Werth's homer, a two-run shot, in the fourth. The Nationals later extended their margin on yet another homer in the sixth, this one from Stephen Drew off Zach Thornton. Five of the Nats' first seven hits against Harvey, Syndergaard and Thornton went for extra bases, including a Daniel Murphy triple and a Matt den Dekker double.
A late replacement for Max Scherzer, who stayed back at Space Coast Stadium for a simulated game, Nationals starter Trevor Gott blanked the Mets over two innings. Sean Burnett, Matt Belisle and Oliver Perez also highlighted Washington's day on the mound with perfect outings in relief.
The Nationals scored five runs (three earned) in the ninth, all credited to Jeurys Familia, as the Mets closer allowed two hits and two walks and committed an error receiving a flip at first that allowed a run to score. The Mets got on the board in the bottom of the ninth on Travis Taijeron's solo home run off Jonathan Papelbon.

Up next for the Nationals: After an off-day Thursday, the Nationals return to Nationals Park on Friday for an exhibition game against the Twins at 6:05 p.m. ET. Washington has not announced a starter yet after four rainouts in 11 games forced the Nationals to shuffle their pitching staff. The game will air on MLB.TV and Gameday Audio.
Up next for the Mets: The Florida portion of their schedule complete, the Mets are headed for a pair of exhibitions in Las Vegas on Thursday and Friday. Vegas native Paul Sewald, an 11th-hour substitution for Jacob deGrom, will start Thursday's opener against the Cubs at 8:05 p.m. ET, opposite right-hander Ryan Williams. The game will air on MLB.TV.
