Nats place Carpenter on DL, recall Solis

WASHINGTON -- The Nationals have added to their injury list, as they placed right-hander David Carpenter on the 15-day disabled list on Friday because of shoulder inflammation. To replace Carpenter in the bullpen, the Nats recalled left-hander Sammy Solis.

Carpenter hasn't pitched since July 5. Part of that time off was spent with his wife, Brittny, who gave birth to their first child, Darrell David Carpenter IV. Carpenter has been a pleasant surprise for Washington. Since joining the team in the middle of June, he has allowed just one run in six innings with four strikeouts.

Manager Matt Williams revealed that he wanted Carpenter to pitch against the Orioles last weekend, but Carpenter was unable to pitch because of his shoulder ailment.

According to Williams, Carpenter was able to throw during practice Thursday, but Carpenter was still feeling some pain.

"Rather than play short [a reliever], he is already a few days into [the disabled list] anyway," Williams said. "We can retro him back to [July] 12. We want to make sure [that he is OK]."

With Carpenter out, the eighth-inning role is up for grabs. Williams said Casey Janssen, Aaron Barrett and Matt Thornton could see action in the eighth inning. It also wouldn't come as a surprise if Tanner Roark saw action in the late innings. He has done a good job in the bullpen, going 1-3 with a 2.96 ERA in 16 games.

As for Solis, he's returning to the Nationals for his third stint of the season. In six games, Solis is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA.
