The Washington Nationals recalled right-handed pitchers Austin Adams and Trevor Gott from Triple-A Syracuse on Friday, optioned left-handed pitcher Sammy Solis to Syracuse, and placed right-handed pitcher Joe Ross on the 10-day disabled list (retroactive to July 11) with a right elbow sprain. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcements.
Adams, 26, joins the Nationals for the first Major League assignment of his career. In his first season in Washington's system, Adams has appeared in 28 games for Triple-A Syracuse, going 4-1 with three saves and a 2.50 ERA (10 ER/36.0 IP). He has recorded 13.3 strikeouts-per-nine innings (53 SO in 36.0 IP), held opposing batters to a .209 average and has yet to allow a home run. He has tossed more than one inning of relief in 13 of his 28 games and in those outings, has posted a 2.31 ERA (6 ER/21.1IP). In his last 12 outings, dating to June 11, Adams has posted a 0.60 ERA (1 ER/15.0 IP) while striking out 20 batters along the way.
Acquired from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Dec. 10, 2016 in exchange for infielder Danny Espinosa, Adams has recorded 11.9 strikeouts-per-nine innings and a .188 batting average against in 193 career Minor League games. His 11.9 strikeouts-per-nine innings rank in the top 15 in all of Minor League Baseball since 2012.
Gott, 24, joins the Nationals for his second Major League assignment of the season. The hard-throwing right-hander has posted a 2-0 record and a 3.34 ERA in 35.0 innings (28 games) of work with Triple-A Syracuse this season. Gott has secured four saves for the Chiefs and posted a 3.30 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Gott has been a reliable member of the Chiefs' bullpen this season, posting a scoreless outing in 21 of his 28 appearances and allowing more than one earned run on only four occasions all year. The 6-foot, 180-pound right-hander has collected all four of his saves since June 1, and since the start of May, he has posted a 2.63 ERA (7 ER/24.0 IP) while striking out 25.
Ross, 24, is 5-3 with a 5.01 ERA in 13 starts for the Nationals in 2017. In four starts prior to July 9, the outing in which he suffered his injury, Ross went 2-1 and posted a 2.36 ERA (7 ER/26.2 IP).
Solis, 28, was reinstated from the disabled list on July 1 after missing 65 games with left elbow inflammation. He appeared in four games, recording one hold. In 65 career games, Solis is 3-5 with a 4.00 ERA.
