The Washington Nationals recalled right-handed pitcher Joe Ross from Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday and placed left-handed pitcher Sammy Solis on the 10-day disabled list with left elbow inflammation. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.
Ross, who will start for Washington on Wednesday night vs. Atlanta at SunTrust Park, joins the Nationals for his first Major League assignment of the season. The right-hander has posted a 12-10 record and a 3.52 ERA over his first two seasons in the Major Leagues (35 games, 32 starts).
The former first-round selection (2011, No. 25 overall) of the San Diego Padres' has struck out 8.03 batters per nine innings in his MLB career, which began June 6, 2015 with Washington, and rarely let the ball leave the yard (0.79 career home runs allowed per nine innings).
With Triple-A Syracuse this season, Ross went 0-1 with a 3.72 ERA in two starts. The 22-year-old joins Washington on the heels of a strong 7.0-inning performance at Pawtucket (Red Sox) in which he allowed just one earned run off six hits. He did not walk a batter and he struck out six.
Solis, 28, has appeared in six games for Washington this season (4.1 IP). The left-hander threw a scoreless eighth inning for the Nationals in Tuesday night's 3-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves. With a 3.11 ERA in 61 Major League games, Solis posted a career-best 2.41 ERA in 2016 while pitching in a career-high 37 games (41.1 IP) for the Nationals.
