Nationals right-handed pitcher Max Scherzer was named an All-Star for the fourth consecutive season, added to the National League squad on Friday by manager Terry Collins. Scherzer's addition gives the Washington Nationals five All-Star representatives, a record for the club since baseball returned to the District in 2005.
 
Scherzer joins four teammates: outfielder Bryce Harper, second baseman Daniel Murphy, catcher Wilson Ramos, and right-handed pitcher Stephen Strasburg, as fellow Midsummer Classic attendees. The Nationals' five honorees are second only to the Chicago Cubs, who will send seven players to San Diego.
 
At 9-6 with a 3.21 ERA, Scherzer is on track to make one more start for Washington before the break. The 31-year-old leads the Major Leagues in strikeouts (155), ranks second in the National League in strikeouts-per-nine-innings (11.56) and has the third-best WHIP (walks plus hits per innings pitched) in the NL (0.97).
 
Scherzer's encore to his two no-hit performances in the 2015 season came on May 11, 2016 when the right-hander struck out 20 Detroit Tigers, matching a Major League record for a nine-inning game, and becoming just the fourth pitcher in Major League history to accomplish such a feat.
 
Scherzer will be replacing Strasburg on the active All-Star roster. Strasburg will attend the game, but he will not pitch.
 
The 2016 Major League All-Star Game will take place at Petco Park in San Diego, Calif., on Tuesday, July 12.
