The Nationals are showing interest in Reds closer Raisel Iglesias, sources told MLB.com on Thursday, as the team tries to address its season-long issues in the late innings.
Iglesias, 27, has converted 15 of 16 save opportunities this season, and he has a 1.59 ERA. He's under contract though 2020 at reasonable salaries, enhancing his appeal to a Washington team that seeks a long-term answer at closer.
The Nationals' 14 blown saves this season are among the most in the Major Leagues. Koda Glover and Shawn Kelley, who closed for the Nats earlier this season, are both on the disabled list.
While Iglesias' favorable contract means Reds general manager Dick Williams won't be desperate to move him, there are compelling reasons to trade the Cuban right-hander now: Iglesias' value never has been higher, and he's in particular demand with other trade candidates -- the Rays' Alex Colome and Royals' Kelvin Herrera -- receding from the market due to their teams' involvement in the crowded American League Wild Card race.
With Trea Turner on the disabled list, the Nationals also could add a shortstop before the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline. However, sources say their evaluation of Reds players has been focused more on Iglesias than All-Star shortstop Zack Cozart.
The Rangers, who lead the Majors with 17 blown saves this season, also are believed to have interest in Iglesias.
