Nationals sign reliever Petit to 1-year deal
Right-hander pitched past four seasons with Giants
WASHINGTON -- The Nationals agreed to a one-year contract with a conditional option for a second year with right-hander Yusmeiro Petit on Monday.
Petit, who was non-tendered by the Giants recently, will most likely be a long man out of the bullpen, replacing Craig Stammen. Petit is best known in Washington for pitching six shutout innings of relief for the Giants in Game 2 of the 2014 National League Division Series against the Nationals, who lost the game in 18 innings.
Petit comes to Washington after spending the previous four seasons as a member of the Giants. The right-hander, who has played parts of eight Major League seasons, was 10-7 with a 3.66 ERA during his tenure with the Giants.
The Nationals are looking to revamp their bullpen after it struggled in the second half of '15. They are also still looking to trade arms at the the back end of the bullpen -- Jonathan Papelbon and Drew Storen.
During his Major League career, which has also included big league time with the Marlins (2006) and D-Backs (2007-09), Petit has a 20-27 record and a 4.59 ERA.
With the addition of Petit, the Nationals currently have 40 players on their 40-man roster.
