Nats considered Martinez a top candidate for job

WASHINGTON -- Rays bench coach Dave Martinez interviewed for the Nationals' managerial job before the team hired Matt Williams. Martinez impressed Washington's front office, and he was one of the top three candidates for the position.

Martinez has been the bench coach for Tampa Bay since 2008. He also serves as a baserunning and bunting coach. Martinez played the outfield over 16 big league seasons with nine teams, including the Expos.

General manager Mike Rizzo declined to say who he interviewed after Davey Johnson retired as manager of the Nats.
