Werth nearing rehab stint as wrist improves

Swinging fungo bat and hitting off tee, Nats outfielder hopes to start assignment after break

WASHINGTON -- Jayson Werth, who has been on the disabled list since May 19 -- retroactive to May 16 -- because of two small fractures in his left wrist, is swinging the fungo bat and hitting off a tee. Werth said the pain is gone, but he now has to get his wrist strength back.

Werth is hoping to start a rehab assignment sometime after the All-Star break. The Nats can use his bat. When healthy, Werth is known for his high on-base percentage -- posting a .394 OBP last season.

Werth hurt the wrist on May 15, when he was hit by a pitch from Padres right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne.
