Series finale vs. Reds postponed by rain

WASHINGTON -- Wednesday night's finale between Washington and Cincinnati was postponed due to rain. No makeup date for the sixth and final regular-season meeting between the teams has been announced.

With an off-day on Thursday, the rainout provides an opportunity for the banged up Nationals to have multiple days off in a row. Wednesday's lineup had two regular starters -- Bryce Harper and Ian Desmond -- slated to play.

Even after the postponement, manager Matt Williams offered no insight on who would start the final three games in Baltimore before the All-Star break.

"Well, we'll know more [Thursday]," Williams said. "Go back in and talk about it. We certainly have a lot of options. We're in the process of doing that now."

Gio Gonzalez was scheduled to start Wednesday night's game, so he could be pushed back and start the series opener Friday. Jordan Zimmermann will also be on full rest by Friday.

Before the rainout, All-Star Max Scherzer was expected to start Sunday, which would have rendered him unavailable for the All-Star Game. How this rainout affects Scherzer's next start, if at all, is yet to be determined.

Due to the lack of mutual off-days between the two teams, scheduling the makeup game might take more maneuvering than usual.

"There are a couple [possibilities] that would take approval from the Players Association, one of which we would be 23 [games] in a row, which is a lot in a row," Williams said.

The Nationals are 0-5 against the Reds this season.
