NC State among schools to advance to College World Series in Omaha
The wait for North Carolina State was long enough.
The school booked its first trip to the College World Series when it defeated Rice, 5-4, in 17 innings, marking the longest Super Regional game in NCAA history and providing plenty of drama for a scintillating Sunday of college baseball. The Wolfpack scored the winning run when Brett Williams' double scored Tarran Senay, and N.C. State held on to head to the championship round for the first time since 1968.
In the Tallahassee regional, the Indiana Hoosiers made history of their own, beating Florida State, 11-6, to make it to the College World Series for the first time in school history. Indiana won twice over Florida State on its home field and became the first Big Ten school to make it to Omaha since Michigan in 1984.
In Nashville, Louisville edged Vanderbilt, 2-1, and followed in the footsteps of its national champion basketball team by advancing to the championship round. Jeff Thompson was the story for the Cardinals. The pitcher allowed one run in seven innings on 124 pitches and did enough to beat the Commodores, who were the No. 2 overall seed in the tournament.
South Carolina pulled one of the upsets of the day in Chapel Hill, beating the No. 1-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels, 8-0, to stay alive in the tournament and handing them their first shutout defeat in 96 games.
In Corvallis, Ore., the hometown Oregon State Beavers held serve, beating Kansas State, 12-4, to force a winner-take-all third game on Monday to determine who will advance to Omaha. Oregon State rapped out 21 hits, including six in a row in the first inning that led to five runs.
And in Charlottesville, Va., the Virginia Cavaliers were down, 5-3, to Mississippi State and facing elimination in the seventh inning when rain and thunderstorms hit and the game was suspended and postponed until Monday afternoon. Bulldogs leadoff hitter Adam Frazier continued his stellar tournament with three RBIs a day after he had six hits.
