National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security recognizes Major League Baseball Senior Vice President Dan Mullin

The National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4) last night named Major League Baseball’s Senior Vice President of Investigations, Dan Mullin, as the recipient of its National Sports Safety & Security Distinguished Leadership Award, which recognizes a professional in the field of sport safety and security who has demonstrated contributions and career achievement in the field.  The award was presented at the National Sports Safety and Security Conference & Exhibition held in New Orleans.

     Mullin was selected to receive the award by a panel of previous award winners as well as the board of the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security at The University of Southern Mississippi. Previous award winners include Mike Rodriguez of the United States Tennis Association, Milt Ahlerich of the National Football League, Senator Thad Cochran of Mississippi and Congressman Bernie Thompson of Mississippi.

     Upon the recommendation of the Mitchell Report in December 2007, Major League Baseball established its Department of Investigations (DOI) in January 2008 with the aim of conducting all investigations into violations of MLB’s rules and policies, including investigations related to the use, possession or distribution of performance-enhancing substances by Major League or Minor League players, and other threats to the integrity of the game.  The Department, which functions independently of MLB Clubs, has broad authority to conduct investigations.  Other DOI duties include interacting with law enforcement authorities, administering training for players and Club personnel, and establishing policies that ensure the integrity and independence of its investigations.

     Mullin was selected to be the first head of the Department of Investigations.  In his role, Mullin has oversight of all investigations related to players, umpires and MLB staff.  He is the co-chair of the Sports group for the Department of Homeland Security Critical Infrastructure Sector, a role in which he represents all of the major sports leagues and the NCAA.  In September, Mullin will become co-chair of the Commercial Facilities Sector.  He also serves on the Life Safety Council at the International Association of Venue Managers.

     Prior to joining Major League Baseball, Dan served 23 years with the New York City Police Department, retiring as a Deputy Chief.
