KANSAS CITY -- While there was some debate on Kansas City talk radio and Twitter about how appropriate it was for fans on Tuesday night to cheer former Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain's home run, manager Ned Yost had no issue with that response.
Cain, now with the Brewers after signing an offseason free-agent contract worth $80 million, had been cheered several times earlier in the game, his first back at Kauffman Stadium. He then led off the seventh inning Tuesday night with a home run to right-center field, stretching a 4-2 lead into a 5-2 advantage.
Royals fans cheered the home run as if Cain was still wearing a Royals uniform.
"Why would I be surprised?' Yost said Wednesday. "Oh come on, man. Serious? I fully expected that. That's why this is one of the best places to play in all of Major League Baseball.
"This fan base, they appreciate their players. They appreciate watching them grow from young upstarts to All-Stars to world champions. They appreciate the journey they took with these guys for six years -- the ins and outs, the bads, the hurts, everything. And they don't forget.
"Last night was kind of what makes this city, this fan base, this area so attractive to every other Major League player, because you are appreciated if you come in and do your best. They understand that this is a tough game and there are ups and downs. You're never forgotten if you come in here like Lorenzo Cain did. It just showed how great this city is."

Kennedy optimistic about foot
A day after taking a hard line drive off his right foot in the third inning Tuesday, Royals right-hander Ian Kennedy sounded optimistic that he could make his next scheduled start on Sunday against the White Sox.

X-rays were negative on Kennedy's foot, but it was sore enough that he had to come out of Tuesday's game after three innings.
On Wednesday, Kennedy said he was moving around much better.
"The swelling went way down," Kennedy said. "It didn't really blow up like we thought it might. We're in the mindset that we'll be OK [for Sunday]."
