SEATTLE -- A Mariners team that already lost Robinson Cano to a broken hand and 80-game suspension took another hit when Nelson Cruz left Tuesday's 9-8 victory in the fourth inning after being hit in the right foot by a pitch from Rangers reliever Brandon Mann.
The injury isn't believed to be too serious, as X-rays showed no broken bones. The Mariners said Cruz has a right foot contusion and will be reevaluated on Wednesday.
"Nelson has a bad bone bruise, which is really good news," manager Scott Servais said. "After seeing him get hit by the pitch and his inability to put any weight on the foot, it was really scary for me, and for him.
"He's going to be out for a day or two, no doubt. But everybody knows his pain tolerance. He can usually play through a lot. So we'll just have to wait and see how he is tomorrow."
Cruz limped to first base after taking the 81-mph slider squarely off the top of his plant foot as he checked his swing. He then grimaced in pain as he was helped off the field after consulting with Mariners athletic trainer Rob Nodine and Servais.
Cruz was also hit by a pitch in the third by Texas starter Mike Minor, which set the table for a bases-loaded, three-run double by Kyle Seager.
The 37-year-old designated hitter is batting .240 with seven home runs and 18 RBIs this season. He missed nine games early in the year after spraining his right ankle when he slipped on the dugout steps after celebrating a home run in the second game of the season.
