SAN FRANCISCO -- After mustering a single hit through eight innings, Nick Hundley hit a walk-off homer in the 10th to give the Giants a come-from-behind 2-1 win over the Cardinals on Saturday afternoon at AT&T Park.
Facing left-hander Ryan Sherriff, Hundley hit an outside sinker to right, lifting it onto the arcade and reaching the first row of the seats for his second-career walk-off homer. Hundley knew it was gone off the bat.
"To play a team like the Cardinals, [who are] still fighting for the playoff race, and come out and get a win -- that's really important," Hundley said. "It's important for us and the league. The rest of the league deserves our best shot, too."

The Giants tied it in the ninth when pinch-hitter Hunter Pence hit a leadoff single off of left-hander Tyler Lyons, advanced on a sac bunt from Joe Panik, and scored when Buster Posey blooped a slider from right-hander Seunghwan Oh to right-center for a single.

The late rally for the Giants negated a masterful effort from Cardinals starter Lance Lynn, who threw eight scoreless innings for the first time since June 23, 2014. Lynn struck out four, walked four and allowed just one hit, a single to the second batter of the game.
"He was great today," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "After he got through that first, he found the plate and found his movement. It was impressive. It's a shame he doesn't get a win out of that."

The Cardinals scored their run in the fourth on a single from William Fowler. It was the only threat the Cardinals could muster off of Jeff Samardzija, who struck out nine in seven innings after not initially being scheduled to pitch Saturday.
"It was good to pick up Samardzija," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "That would have been a tough loss for him. After last night, you late to lose the games you think you should win. You feel like you got it back today."

The Cardinals are four games back of the Rockies in the National League Wild Card race. The Cards also fell seven games behind the Cubs, who beat the Braves on Saturday, in the NL Central hunt.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Early escape: The Giants' only real threat against Lynn came came right out of the gate, when Lynn gave up a single to Panik and walked Posey and Pablo Sandoval to load the bases with two outs in the first. But Lynn got Hundley to ground into a fielder's choice to avoid any damage.
"He flicked a ball to left for the one hit, then I had a double play ball that I only got one out on, and then I walked Sandoval because I didn't want to mess with him, and then I got an out," Lynn said. "I did exactly what I wanted to." More >

Timely grounder: Fowler tripled to lead off the 10th off Giants reliever Sam Dyson. Harrison Bader replaced him as a pinch-hitter, and with one out, Dyson got Stephen Piscotty to hit a hard grounder to third baseman Pablo Sandoval, who fired a perfect strike home to cut down Bader. After allowing five runs on Friday night, including a triple to Fowler, Bochy was impressed at how Dyson responded to "lightning striking twice."
"What a job he did, keeping his poise," Bochy said. "He got the ground balls. Once he got the one out, we thought they were going on contact and we were fortunate enough and Pablo made a nice play and tag by Hundley. Great job by Dyson keeping his concentration. After last night, you go, 'Oh no. Here we go again.' But he bowed his neck and found a way to get out of it."
"Run on contact, try to make something happen there with less than two outs," Matheny said of Bader's approach to the grounder. "Ideally, when he knows it's hit to third base, he can get in a run down and try to get the batter to second base, but it didn't work out."

"That was hot out there. It was kind of sneaky. I think I asked a few people around who've been here for a while and they've never seen this before. It's pretty wild. FOWLER EXITS
Fowler was pulled for Bader in the 10th after the triple with what Matheny called a sore hip. The outfielder hurt it when he slid into second base trying to stretch his RBI single to a double in the fourth, according to Matheny. He's considered day-to-day.

WHAT'S NEXT
Cardinals: Right-hander Luke Weaver (3-1, 2.48 ERA) will take the mound in for the 3:05 p.m. CT finale of the four-game series at AT&T Park. After recording double-digit strikeouts his last two times out, Weaver is the first Cardinal rookie to strike out 10 or more in back-to-back starts since Rick Ankiel.
Giants: San Francisco will hand the ball to left-hander Madison Bumgarner (3-6, 2.85 ERA) for Sunday's 1:05 p.m. PT series finale. Bumgarner was originally slated to pitch Thursday against the Cards but was scratched with flu-like symptoms.
