No timeframe for Holliday's return from quad injury

ST. LOUIS -- Matt Holliday suspects that he'll be playing again "soon," but the Cardinals' veteran left fielder could not specify a timeframe for his return while speaking to the media on Friday, two days after injuring his right quad for the second time this year.

"It's one of those deals [where] you know when you know, and right now I don't have any idea," Holliday said.

The Cardinals placed Holliday on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, announcing he suffered a Grade 2 quad strain on the same day they acquired Brandon Moss from Cleveland to add power to a struggling lineup that had just readjusted to Holliday's presence.

The injury occurred while Holliday was attempting to beat out a double play in the first inning of Wednesday's 1-0 loss to the Reds.

The 35-year-old All-Star and three-hole hitter initially strained his quad on June 8 and missed over a month, returning on July 17 while still working to regain all of his mobility. He said he felt he had made it "over the hump" before he went down again on Wednesday.

"There's that fine line of being able to play at less than 100 percent and for whatever reason I was probably still a little susceptible to injury, and unfortunately it got me," Holliday said.

Holliday received a platelet-rich plasma injection on Thursday. He said that a PRP injection was not discussed when he was returning from his first quad strain.

"I want to play as soon as I can play," Holliday said. "My leg will dictate when that is. Whenever I am able to run and play at a decent clip, I'll play."
