No timetable for Gonzales' return at Triple-A

LOS ANGELES -- Left-hander Marco Gonzales, who had to stop throwing after feeling discomfort around his left shoulder during a game of catch on May 23, continues to be "progressing as planned," general manager John Mozeliak said on Thursday. Gonzales has not, however, resumed throwing, and the timetable for his return to game action remains fuzzy.

Gonzales, who is the club's No. 2-ranked prospect, was diagnosed with a shoulder impingement after undergoing an MRI nine days ago. At the time, Mozeliak said the organization was optimistic that Gonzales may only be sidelined from pitching for about three weeks.

Though the Cardinals don't have Gonzales as a ready option should there be a need at the Major League level, left-hander Tim Cooney has had a strong run lately as Triple-A Memphis' top starter. He hasn't allowed a run over his last two starts (16 innings) and leads the league in WHIP (0.87) and batting average against (.187). Cooney's season ERA sits at 2.55.

Other news from across the farm system:
• Infielder Greg Garcia and right-hander Luis Perdomo were selected as the Cardinals' Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Month, respectively, for their standout performances in May. Garcia, who played primarily at short last month for Triple-A Memphis, hit .361 with a .421 on-base percentage in 27 games. He reached base in 23 of those games and tallied four doubles, 11 multihit games and 12 RBIs.

Perdomo, a member of Class A Peoria rotation, posted a 1.42 ERA in five starts. In his final start of the month, Perdomo allowed three hits and struck out nine over eight innings.

• Four members of the Cardinals' Peoria affiliate have been named to the Midwest League All-Star Game. Those selectees include Oscar Mercado, who will start at shortstop, as well as pitchers Perdomo, Daniel Poncedeleon and Austin Gomber. The Midwest League All-Star Game will be held at the Chief's home field, Dozer Park, on June 23. Peoria manager Joe Kruzel will manage the West All-Stars.
