SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Rockies' pitching staff held the split-squad Padres to three hits in Colorado's 3-1 Cactus League victory over San Diego on Wednesday.
Tyler Chatwood got the Rockies off on the right foot with a pair of solid innings in his first start of the spring. After a leadoff triple from Manuel Margot, who scored on a groundout, the Rockies allowed just one more hit through the eighth.
San Diego was nearly as effective on the mound, holding the Rockies to five hits. Paul Clemens looked much better in his second Cactus League start for the Padres, logging three innings and allowing one run on a hit and a walk while striking out two. Cesar Vargas struggled with command in his second appearance, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and five walks over 1 1/3 innings. Both Clemens and Vargas are working to remain in the conversation for a spot in the Padres' rotation.

Colorado catcher Tony Wolters picked up a couple hits, including an infield single in the fourth that resulted in a run when second baseman Carlos Asuaje bobbled the ball as Chris Denorfia raced home with an insurance run.
"Two nice swings, two hard-hit singles," manager Bud Black said of Wolters. "He did another good job behind the plate. The homer is in there, but let's think about getting on base, let's think about hitting the ball to all fields."
Nolan Arenado added an RBI, his fourth of the Cactus League season, in a 1-for-3 afternoon.

Ryan Schimpf made his first appearance of the spring, looking to build on an impressive rookie campaign in 2016 that saw him hit 20 home runs and drive home 51 runs over 89 games. The second baseman was in the DH slot Wednesday, and he went 0-for-3 and was hit by a pitch.
Padres Up Next:Christian Friedrich is sitting on the fringe of the Padres' rotation this spring. He gets his first chance to make a case for a starting spot when the Friars head to Scottsdale to face the D-backs at 12:10 p.m. PT. Kevin Quackenbush, Jon Edwards and Miguel Diaz -- who are competing for spots in the bullpen -- will also pitch.
