Here are four interesting items from around the big leagues on Wednesday …
• The Rockies had 18 hits -- 12 for extra bases -- and defeated the Giants, 10-6. Nolan Arenado led the way with two homers and a double. The third baseman also drove in seven; he entered this game with three extra-base hits and five RBIs for the year. In his age-24 season in 2015, Arenado collected 89 extra-base hits and drove in 130 runs. Looking at all third basemen in their age-24 and 25 seasons combined, the high mark for extra-base hits is 150, by David Wright in 2007-08, while the top mark for RBIs belongs to Miguel Cabrera, who had 246 in 2007-08.

• Maikel Franco doubled and homered and the Phillies defeated the Padres, 2-1. In 88 games since the start of 2015, Franco -- now playing in his age-23 season -- has posted a 133 OPS+. In Phils history, five players have posted an OPS+ of at least 125 (while playing a minimum of 150 games) in their age-22 and age-23 seasons combined: Sherry Magee in 1907-08 (157 OPS+); Dick Allen in 1964-65 (154); Nap Lajoie in 1897-98 (146); Elmer Flick in 1898-99 (146); and Scott Rolen in 1997-98 (130).

• Jarrod Saltalamacchia's grand slam -- the 100th roundtripper of his career -- put the Tigers ahead to stay in a 7-3 win over the Pirates. Saltalamacchia is the ninth switch-hitter with at least half of his career games at catcher to record at least 100 homers, joining Jorge Posada (275), Ted Simmons (248), Mickey Tettleton (245), Todd Hundley (202), Victor Martinez (202), Jason Varitek (193), Ryan Doumit (104) and Matt Wieters (100). Among all players with at least half of their games at catcher, 49 righty swingers have 100 or more homers, and 18 reached the century mark batting from the left side.

• In the Twins' 3-0 loss to the White Sox, Phil Hughes surrendered a home run, issued no walks and took the loss. Since 2014, Hughes is 10-7 with five no-decisions in starts in which he gives up more homers than walks. Hughes' 22 starts since 2014 with more homers than walks are the most in the Majors, with Bartolo Colon having 21. Since the start of the 2014 season, starters are 345-615 with 352 no-decisions when allowing more homers than walks.
