Arenado's record night sparks romp vs. Giants

SAN FRANCISCO -- Nolan Arenado continued his torrid hitting against the San Francisco Giants in general and at AT&T Park in particular by homering, doubling and driving in three runs Friday night to pace the Colorado Rockies to a 9-3 victory.

Arenado has amassed 10 homers against the Giants this season, including six in San Francisco. He homered off Giants starter Chris Heston (12-11) to open the scoring in the second inning and lashed a two-run double in a five-run, third-inning uprising.

"Whenever I come to San Fran I get a little more pumped up to come," Arenado said. "They're the defending world champs. The fans are always good. It's always packed. I love being in that atmosphere."

Colorado starter Kyle Kendrick (7-13) allowed one run and five hits in six innings. His lone lapse occurred in the second inning, when Brandon Crawford singled and scored on Jarrett Parker's double. Crawford doubled home San Francisco's other two runs in the eighth.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Extra! Read all about it! In his first two at-bats, Arenado inked his name in the record book. The second-inning leadoff homer and his two-run double in the third increased Arenado's extra-base hit total to 88, most in a season by a third baseman. He entered the night tied with the Braves' Eddie Mathews (87 in 1953) for second, and the double put him one ahead of the Braves' Chipper Jones (1999). The homer, Arenado's 42nd, moved him ahead of the Nationals' Bryce Harper for the National League lead. Arenado increased his Majors-leading RBI total to 130 and is the first NL third baseman to reach that figure since Vinny Castilla had 131 for the Rockies in 2004.

"He just continues to add on to his marvelous season and he seems to do it on a daily basis," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "It's just an incredible year on both sides of the ball. He's a big-time player."

Major mistake: No good, it seems, can ever come from walking the pitcher. Heston committed this baseball sin with one out and nobody on base in the third inning. He recovered by retiring the next batter, but then the next four Rockies hit safely.

"Any time you're walking guys, you're putting more runners on, and bad things can happen," Heston said.

Finishing much the way he started: Kendrick fanned Crawford and Parker to end the sixth and complete his six-strikeout performance. The game was somewhat reminiscent of his Rockies debut, when he pitched seven scoreless inning with six strikeouts against the Brewers. The problem was what happened in between, as evidenced by his 6.32 final ERA.

"It was a frustrating year, let's say that -- it wasn't how I envisioned me, personally, and the team, too," said Kendrick, who signed a one-year, $5.5 million contract as a free agent before the season. "It was a mentally challenging year, my worst year numbers-wise.

"In August, my shoulder wasn't recovering between starts. I'm glad everything was good with the MRI, and my last three, four starts I felt great. Today I felt like it was April. That was good."

"Last year, I had 16 homers at home and two on the road, and people were saying I'm a Coors Field hitter. I didn't hit homers on the road because people were saying that. But I know what I can do. I'm happy I was able to prove it this year. I guess I kind of put those questions to rest." -- Arenado, who has 22 of his homers on the road.

Crawford and Matt Duffy have seven homers at AT&T Park to lead all players this season. Arenado has six, although he's a visitor. Additionally, Arenado is the first opponent since the Cardinals' Stan Musial in 1953 to have 10 homers and 24 RBIs against the Giants in a season.

WHAT'S NEXT
Rockies: Lefty Chris Rusin defeated the Dodgers in his last start for just his second win in his last seven outings. Rusin will go for his second road win, in 12 road starts this season, on Saturday against the Giants at AT&T Park at 2:05 p.m. MT.

Giants: Jake Peavy will try to maintain his recent success in Saturday's 1:05 p.m. PT affair, having won his last four decisions in a span of seven starts. The right-hander has compiled a 2.68 ERA in that stretch, which includes a Sept. 5 victory at Colorado.
