The Oakland A's today named current bullpen coach Scott Emerson as the club's new pitching coach. Curt Young has been relieved of his duties.
Emerson was named the A's bullpen coach on Oct. 30, 2014, and has been a coach in the Oakland organization since 2003. Prior to his stint as A's bullpen coach, he served as pitching coach in Single-A Modesto (2003-04), Single-A Stockton (2005-06), Double-A Midland (2007-11), and the A's former Triple-A affiliate in Sacramento (2012). From 2013-14, he was the A's minor league roving pitching instructor.
Emerson began his coaching career in the Pittsburgh organization as a minor league pitching coach from 2000-02. He played professionally for six seasons in the Baltimore (1992-95), Boston (1995-96), and Arizona (1997) organizations.
Young was in the sixth season of his second stint as A's pitching coach, having previously served in the same role from 2004-10. He was the Boston Red Sox pitching coach in 2011. He also coached in the A's minor league system for eight seasons after an 11-year Major League playing career, primarily with the A's (1983-91, 1993). He was a member of the A's 1989 World Series championship team.
Gil Patterson, the A's current minor league pitching coordinator, will serve as bullpen coach through the Yankees series this weekend.
