Arlington, Texas - The Texas Rangers announced prior to tonight's game with Boston that the club has activated right-handed pitcher Jeremy Jeffress from the 10-day disabled list. To make room for Jeffress on the active roster, the team has designated right-handed pitcher Ernesto Frieri for assignment.
Jeffress was placed on the 10-day disabled list on June 22, retroactive to June 21, with a strained lower back muscle. He has a 1-2 record with a 5.46 ERA (18 ER/29.2 IP) in 31 relief appearances for Texas this season, and he still ranks third on the staff in games pitched despite missing two weeks. He last pitched on June 20 vs. Toronto and has posted scoreless outings in 6 of his last 7 appearances.
Frieri went 0-1 with a 5.14 ERA (4 ER/7.0 IP) in 6 relief appearances for the Rangers after having his contract purchased from Triple-A Round Rock on June 17. The Rangers have seven days to trade, release, or outright Frieri to the minor leagues.
After today's transactions, the Rangers now have 39 players on the club's major league roster, along with five players on the 60-day disabled list.
CLAIBORNE ASSIGNED TO ROUND ROCK: Right-handed pitcher Preston Claiborne, who was designated for assignment on July 2 after being optioned to Triple-A Round Rock on June 29, has been assigned outright to Round Rock. He allowed 3 runs in 2.0 innings in his only appearance with the Rangers on June 26 at Cleveland.
MINOR LEAGUE TRADE: The Rangers have traded minor league infielder Luis Silva to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for cash considerations. The 22-year-old Venezuela native was originally signed by Texas in 2013 and has appeared in 7 games this season for the High-A Down East Wood Ducks.
