The Miami Marlins today announced that the Club signed 36 of its 41 selections from the 2017 First-Year Player Draft before today's signing deadline, including its first 26 picks. The signings were announced by Marlins' Vice President of Scouting Stan Meek.
 
Miami drafted 37 players from the college ranks, signing 32 of them. It also signed all four high school prospects that it selected. The signed 2017 class includes 21 pitchers (14 right-handers/7 left-handers), three catchers, eight infielders, and four outfielders. Left-handed pitcher Trevor Rogers, 19, was Miami's top pick this season, taken in the first round out of Carlsbad High School in New Mexico. He was 11-0 with a 0.33 ERA (63.1 ip/3 er) in 11 starts as a senior, striking out 134 batters and walking just 13. As a junior, he went 9-2 with a 0.70 ERA (69.2/37) and 122 strikeouts, leading the Cavemen to a Class 6A state championship. He finished his high school career with a 26-5 record and 0.73 ERA (182.0/19), with 325 strikeouts.
 
The college signings were headed by University of North Carolina center fielder Brian Miller (Raleigh, NC) in Competitive Balance Round A (36th overall); and North Carolina State shortstop Joe Dunand(Miami, FL) in the second round (51st).
 
A freshman year walk-on at UNC, Miller broke out as a sophomore and junior, leading the Tar Heels in both seasons in batting average, runs scored, on-base percentage, and steals. He recently completed his junior season, batting .343 (93x271) in 63 games, with 61 runs scored, 16 doubles, three triples, seven home runs, and 49 RBI. He was also 24-of-30 in stolen base attempts. Prior to this season, he earned Cape Cod League All-Star honors for Orleans, batting .327 with 21 RBI and 15 steals in 41 games.
 
Dunand, a Miami native who attended Gulliver Prep, completed his junior year this spring. He batted .287 (60x209) in 61 games, with 42 runs scored, 12 doubles, three triples, 18 home runs, a .632 slugging percentage, and 51 RBI. Prior to the season, he was named to the Cape Cod League All League Team after batting .326 with five homers and 24 RBI in 34 games for Harwich. Dunand is the nephew of former Major Leaguer Alex Rodriguez.
